How long does it take to colour hair?
You know it: The duration of hair colouring varies depending on the hair type, hair length, desired colour intensity and the technique used. You can tell that to your hairdresser: Hair colouring with a lead comb
At the beginning of the 20th century, colouring hair without a brush was not uncommon. For a dark colour, for example, it was advised to dip a lead comb in vinegar and comb the hair with it. With each stroke, the hair was coloured with a natural-looking dark tone. However, the price for this look was high: Inflammation of the eyes, headaches and the black-grey deposits of lead sulphide on the teeth known as lead stain meant that this method was quickly abandoned.
Other ways to apply hair colour without a brush
Hairstylists use various techniques when applying hair colour - a brush is not always necessary. One common method, which is also used for self-colouring, is to apply the colour with your hands. Disposable gloves should always be worn to avoid skin contact with the colour. The hair is first divided into sections before the colour is worked in evenly with the fingers.
Another alternative is applicator bottles, which are sometimes used by stylists. With these, the hair colour can be applied directly to the hair and distributed with a comb. It is important to distribute the dye evenly to avoid unwanted stains or uneven colour results. Whilst both methods are possible, they require a lot of dexterity and practice.
